The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) revealed that more than 7.5 million people receive the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant monthly. While many people have been approved for payment, grant beneficiaries are encountering challenges collecting their money.

Sassa has reminded SRD grant beneficiaries who received payment dates from the agency to collect their money when they receive an SMS. This SMS will contain a voucher number from their chosen bank.

The Agency explained, “Cash send clients who have pay dates are requested to collect funds as soon as they have received an SMS with a voucher number from their chosen bank.”

Grant beneficiaries who do not have payment dates for their SRD grant are reminded that the absence of dates means that the payment has not been processed. Sassa says grant payments will be processed in due time.

Sassa said, “If you are approved with no pay date it means payment has not been processed as yet, however, payment will be processed soon.”

Individuals whose SRD application was declined by Sassa can lodge an appeal for reconsideration on the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals (ITSAA) website.

The ITSAA uses various databases to verify information provided by appeal applicants to verify their eligibility for the grant. The databases are used to confirm personal information and income information.

This process can take between 60 and 90 days to complete. Once the process is completed, the appealing applicant will be notified.

It’s important that the decision made by the ITSAA is final and applicants will be unable to appeal the decision. They may approach the High Court of South Africa for judicial review. This review must be requested within 180 days of the ITSAA’s decision.
