Stellenbosch University (SU) has recently been in headlines, following allegations of racism and rape within the student community. The university has shared how it plans to approach and improve student safety on campus.
The university has shared that it takes a zero-tolerance approach to racism on its campuses and has also confirmed that it has implemented comprehensive measures to combat racism.
According to Stellenbosch University, these measures will continue to improve on an ongoing basis.
Based on recent events, in a statement, the university clarified:
The University acknowledges the right of staff and students to participate in peaceful protests, provided that administrative and academic activities are not disrupted.
According to the university, each residence would have its own set of safety measures such as access control (card access; door monitors at some residences, etc), early alert systems, WhatsApp groups, safety drills, and safety committees.
“It is understandable that students may experience feelings of vulnerability due to the past week’s events,” said Prof Stan du Plessis, Chief Operating Officer.
It has been reported that the outcome of a disciplinary hearing of the racism case between Theuns du Toit and Babalo Ndwayana is still outstanding.
Another incident that had surfaced is that of a student accused of raping another student at a residence in Victoria Street, Stellenbosch.
Stellenbosch University says these incidents have led to first semester examinations being postponed until 30 May 2022.
However, the university has acknowledged that students might not be feeling safe following these incidents.
