The Compensation Fund, part of the Department of Labour in South Africa, provides compensation to workers injured, diseased or disabled while performing the duties of their employment, as well as for death from injuries or diseases contracted while working.
The Compensation Fund pays compensation to permanent workers, casual workers, apprentices, and trainees who lose income after they are injured or contract a disease while carrying out their work.
ABOUT THE COMPENSATION FUND BURSARY PROGRAMME – FIELDS COVERED
The Compensation Fund is inviting candidates to apply for the Compensation Fund External Bursary Scheme, for 2023 academic year.
Compensation Fund Bursary South Africa 2023 will be awarded to 2 groups of people:
Group 1:
COID (Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases) Pensioners or Unemployed Persons who are permanently disabled as a result of an occupational injury or disease.
Unemployed COID Pensioners or Unemployed COID clients, who are permanently disabled as a result of an occupational injury or disease, can study towards ANY qualification that will increase their chances of reintegration into the labour market.
COID pensioners or COID clients, who are permanently disabled, but not yet classified as COID Pensioners, can study Vocational Training (including but not limited to): Carpentry, Dressmaking, Electrical, Poultry Farming, Plumbing, Traditional and Hydroponic Vegetable Cultivation and Agro-processing, Upholstery and Furniture Making, Welding, Other Vocational Training
Group 2:
Dependents of COID pensioners or dependents and COID beneficiaries who are permanently disabled but not (yet) classified as COID Pensioners.
This bursary covers the following priority qualifications for dependents of COID pensioners:
- Accounting Science/ BCom (Honours) in Accounting/ CTA
- Actuarial Science and Financial Mathematics / Actuarial Science/ Mathematical Science/ Statistics/ Data Science
- Aeronautical Engineering/ Aerospace Control/ Aviation
- Agriculture
- Analytical Chemistry/ Biochemistry / Biotechnology/ Microbiologist
- Architectures/ Town Planning/ Construction Management/ Quantity Surveyor
- BSc in Computer Science and Informatics/ Information Technology (Specialising with artificial intelligence/ machine learning/ data science & analytics/ data engineering/ Cyber security/ Cloud Computing/ Internet of Things (IoT)/ Quantum Computing/ robotics/ Software engineering/ Computer networks)

- Apprenticeship full programme (for capable candidates who exited the mainstream schooling system at Grade 9, have General Education Certificate (GEC) and have the potential to excel in this programme) (applicants must submit pre-entry assessment outcomes).

The bursary will provide cover for the following expenses: tuition fees, prescribed study materials, accommodation and a monthly stipend.
Bursaries are awarded for 1 academic year at a time and are renewable each year (for the entire duration of the qualification), depending on satisfactory academic performance and availability of funds.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE COMPENSATION FUND BURSARY SOUTH AFRICA 2023
Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):
Group 1:
- You must be a South African citizen
- You must be currently unemployed
- You must be of working age
- You must have acquired a permanent disability due to occupational injuries or diseases
- You must be studying intend on studying within one of the aforementioned fields of study (full-time if not disabled, part-time if disabled)
- You must have been accepted or preliminary accepted to study at a Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) College, Community Education and Training (CET) or Higher Education Institution (HEI)
- You must intend to improve your skills to return to the workforce or become self-employed
Group 2:
- You must be a South African citizen
- You must be between 17 and 25 years old
- You must be a dependant on a COID pension or dependants of COID people who are permanently disabled after suffering occupational injuries or diseases
- You must be studying or enrolled to study within one of the aforementioned fields of study (full-time if not disabled, part-time if disabled)
- You must have been accepted or preliminary accepted to study at a Public Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) College or Higher Education Institution (HEI)
