Career

Ms Portia Derby founded Ubu Investment Holdings Pty Ltd and was the CEO of the company for a while. In February 2020, she was appointed as the Group Chief Executive Officer of Transnet SOC Ltd. During the South African economic reform, Ms Portia Derby occupied high government positions as shown below;

• 2002: Chief Operating Officer of the Department of Trade and Industry.
• 2004 – 2005: Corporate Strategy and Structure of the Investment Portfolio.
• 2005 – 2009: Director-General of Public Enterprises (2005 – 2009) ..

Portia Derby also worked as a financial researcher at the National Institute for Economic Policy (NIEP). This is where her career in government started. Between 1997 and 2001, Portia was part of the team that founded the National Investment and Trade Promotion Agency. At a point, she became it’s Chief Operating Officer. She also served as a non-executive director of Metair Investments and Safcol. And as an Executive Director: Clients Africa at Aurecon (an international engineering and infrastructure advisory company). She also served as the Chief Operating Officer of Trade and Investment South Africa.
