As the December holidays come to an end and the new year is fast-approaching, many of South Africa’s learners and their parents will begin preparations for the upcoming 2023 school year.
The Department of Basic Education (DBE) has revealed when schools will reopen in 2023.
However, in South Africa, it is important to note that schools based inland have a different opening date than schools based in coastal provinces. Therefore, schools in Gauteng may open earlier or later than schools in the Western Cape.
Coastal Cluster schools (based in the Western Cape, Eastern Cape, Northern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal provinces) will be opening for its learners from 18 January, 2023.
Inland Cluster schools (based in Gauteng, Free State, Limpopo, Mpumalanga and North West provinces) will be opening one week earlier, on 11 January, 2023.
Teachers head back to the classroom a few days earlier than their learners, in order to continue preparations for the academic year.
Schools in inland provinces will open for educators on 9 January 2023, while schools in inland provinces will welcome teachers on 16 January 2023.
Aside from the different term one starting dates, the other dates and durations of the following three terms are the same for all of the country’s nine provinces.
For both coastal and inland schools, term two will begin on 12 April and will end on 23 June, 2023; term three will begin on 18 July and will end on 29 September, 2023; term four will begin 10 October and the school year will officially wrap up on 13 December, 2023.
Term one for coastal schools will end on 31 March, while for inland schools, the term one closing date is 24 March, 2023.
