If you’re a high school learner or university student and are interested in job shadowing, as well as field or vacation work, you can apply to job shadow at the City during your school/university holidays.
Job shadowing entails following a professional for a few days and observing their day-to-day work. It is an excellent way to see what a job really involves and can also help you decide which qualification to study or career path to take.
How to apply for a job shadow position
You will need to be a South African citizen who lives in Cape Town and you should be in high school or attending university.
HOW TO APPLY
Please include with your application:
- a completed job shadow application form
- a certified copy of your ID (not older than 3 months)
- a letter from your school/college requesting job shadowing and the duration (1 – 5 days only)
- a signed letter from your parent/guardian confirming permission, if under 18 years old
- a short CV (must contain your address and your educator/lecturer contact numbers)
Field work
Field work allows final year students to complete work that aligns with their studies, to obtain their qualification. Students can work at the City for up to one month.
Vacation work
Vacation work helps students get work experience in their chosen field of study for up to three weeks.
How to apply for field/vacation work
You will need to be a South African citizen who lives in Cape Town and a university student.

- Completed field work application form or vacation work application form;
- Certified copy of your ID (not older than 3 months);
- Letter from your university institution requesting field/vacation work; and
- Short one-page CV (must contain your educator/lecturer contact information)
