Higher Education Making Progress On Student Registration Challenges

This years’ registrations at institutions of higher learning has been challenging as a number of students had financial blocks which held them back from registering. Higher Education Minister has shared the progress his department has been making to solve student issues.

been financially blocked, student formations along with fellow students were in protest in various institutions. Higher Education Minister shared on the progress that has been made by his department in terms of tackling these student issues.

The Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Innovation, Dr. Blade Nzimande had been encouraged by the level of commitment to institutional engagements between management and the Student Representative Councils (SRCs) to resolve all outstanding challenges in institutions of higher learning.

Students had been vocal about a series of issues such as registrations, unblocking of returning students, payment of allowances, historical debt, mandatory vaccinations, and accommodation issues.

The Department of Higher Education and Training has released a statement, and in it, Nzimande said:

I, therefore, would like to encourage both the management and student leaders to continue to find institutional-based solutions to the outstanding challenges, using the framework provided by the Department of Higher Education and Training.

The following universities have extended their registration deadlines:

  1. Durban University of Technology (DUT) – first-year registration extensions from (21
  2. February to 11 March). Returning students from 21 to 25 February);
  3. Nelson Mandela University (NMU) from 14 February to 4 March;
  4. University of the Free State (UFS) first-year extension 21 to 28 February;
  5. University of KwaZulu Natal (UKZN) registration extended to 4 March 2022.

It has been reported that the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) student portal technical issues have been resolved.

NSFAS has released confirmation lists to all institutions informing them of which students are eligible to receive the NSFAS bursary in 2022. 2

Universities rely on this list to register students and to also confirm accommodation as approved by institutions.
