The time has finally arrived, as the Minister of Basic Education has confirmed the national pass rate for the matric class of 2021. Many experts predicted a low pass rate, but the Minister’s announcement is a pleasant surprise compared to the predictions.
Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga has congratulated the class of 2021 for making it through matric, despite being affected by the Covid-19 pandemic for 2 years.
Motshekga announced that the national matric pass rate for the class of 2021 has gone up from the previous year. This is in contrast to what many education experts had predicted.
A total number of 897 163 candidates sat to write the National Senior Certificate exam in 2021. This is an increase of 23.6% from 2020, making this the largest cohort that the department has had to accommodate.
Of these learners, 733 198 were full time learners, while 163 965 were part time learners. During her announcement, the Minister revealed that the much anticipated national pass rate for the matric class of 2021 is 76.4%, making this an improvement of 0.2% from the previous year.
Of the learners who wrote the final exam, 256 031 learners (36.4%) got bachelors passes, making this an increase from last year.
“The number of bachelors is the highest attained in the entire history of the NSC exams, but the second highest to that attained in 2019 when expressed as percentages.”
Motshekga said this increase in Bachelors passes is mainly due to the fact that there were more candidates who wrote the exam, compared to previous years.
“We had more learners this year so more young people got bachelors”
Minister Motshekga also took time to praise the class of 2021 as being a matric class that produced outstanding results despite the conditions many learners were faced with.
Learners can expect to receive their individual matric results on Friday, 21 January 2022.
