The National Student Financial Aid Scheme said it was all systems go to fund eligible students for the 2023 academic year and students have now been informed of the outcome of their bursary applications.
Applications for funding through the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (Nsfas) has been closed for 2023.
Nsfas received more than one million funding applications for 2023 and a total of 941 491 students who submitted bursary applications were approved.
All applicants have been encouraged to check their bursary applications status as it will inform them whether they are being funded for the 2023 academic year or whether any additional information is required to process their application.
The scheme says that the students will receive either one of the following application outcomes:
Application Approved
This implies that a students application has been processed and according to the Nsfas funding criteria they are provisionally approved for funding.
Once the public universities or TVET college students are registered at submits valid academic registration data, the scheme will make payments toward their studies.

Application Unsuccessful
This application status means that a student’s application for the Nsfas bursary has been processed. However, according to the funding criteria, the student does not meet one or more of the requirements for funding.
Students can check their application status via their myNsfas accounts, emails and communications via SMS to the cell phone number provided during the application process.

Applicants can now also connect with the scheme via WhatsApp on 078 519 8006 and USSD code using *120*67327#.
Unsuccessful applicants are reminded that they can appeal the funding decision via their myNsfas accounts and appeals can be lodged within 30 days of receiving the application results.
Nsfas says that of the R47.6 billion budget for 2023, universities would receive R38.6 billion while R8.9 billion was allocated to Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) colleges.
