- According to a report by HAITU, nursing Tuition Fees Alleged To Have Increased by 200%
- The Health and Allied workers Indaba Trade Union (HAITU) stated that they are appalled at the 200% increase in nursing tuition fees
- The Union Provincial Chairperson Bafana Tshabalala stated that they are unsure as to why there has been such a steep increase in the tuition fees.
According to the Health and Allied workers Indaba Trade Union (HAITU), Gauteng College of Nursing increased its nursing course from R3 000 to more than R11 000. The union has written to the principal of the college and the Gauteng Health MEC.

The Union Provincial Chairperson Bafana Tshabalala stated that they are unsure as to why there has been such a steep increase in the tuition fees. Tshabalala stated that the college did not engage with the union to discuss the fee increase.

HAITU sent a letter to the college principal, however, the union was informed that the college does not interact with unions. Tshabalala stated that the college principal will only interact with the college’s Student Representative Council (SRC).
After numerous discussions with the college council, the SRC was unsuccessful in stopping the tuition increase. Therefore, the SRC reached out to the union to inform them about the tuition increase.

The Gauteng Health MEC has noted the union’s communication and will revert back to them once they have more information about the matter. The union has given the MEC seven working days to respond to their written communication.
Tshabalala stated that if they do not receive a response from the Department within seven days, they plan to march to the Department of Health. The union aims to ensure that its members are not taken advantage of.
